MorphStick Barcode 2 Ethernet

The MorphStick Barcode 2 Ethernet is a modular barcode reader, capable of sending scanned data directly as Ethernet packets. Scanned codes can be sent as UDP datagrams or USB frames in a user configurable format.

How it works

The MorphStick Barcode 2 Ethernet is a powerful, yet simple to use 1D barcode scanner with an Ethernet communication interface. Connect 5V DC power using the vertical USB-A socket, and Ethernet to the RJ45 socket. After a simple configuration procedure, the Morphstick will read barcodes and transfer data over Ethernet to a chosen destination address using a configurable UDP datagram. Alternatively, data can be transferred over Virtual COM using a local USB connection.

Highly configurable

All MorphStick devices feature a button, which switches them into configuration mode over USB. An free lightweight application is available, which guides through the configuration process. During configuration the basic network communication needs to be configured, such as the where to send the acquired data. It takes just a few minutes to get the basic data transfer running, however the flexibility of the device also allows setting up sophisticated communication schemes.

Barcode standards

The MorphStick Barcode 2 Ethernet uses visible 620nm red light and a CCD imaging sensor. It scans all popular 1D standards used throughout the industry: Code 128, EAN-8, EAN-13, UPC-E, UPC-A, Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF), ITF-14, Matrix 2 of 5, Code 39, Codabar, Code 93, UCC/EAN-128, Code 11, Code 25, Plessey Code.

Modular enclosure

The MorphStick Barcode 2 Ethernet comes in a 100mm x 68mm (3.94" x 2.68") enclosure with a mounting flange. The sensor window has an O-ring seal intended for mounting in 48mm...50mm (1.89"...2.00") holes.

Power considerations

The MorphStick Barcode 2 Ethernet can be powered with 5V DC through the USB connector, or with +9V...+24V DC through the terminal connector. The maximum power consumption is 1.5W (when scanning). The device features two general purpose relays, allowing to control external power loads (up to 230V AC, 10A).

The bigger picture

Morphsticks are essentially building blocks of bigger communication systems. The data originating from MorphStick Barcode 2 Ethernet can be sent to several destinations. One of them can be the MorphStick Ethernet 2 Serial, creating a transfer link over Ethernet for serial devices. Another destination can be a host computer, with dedicated software, such as a cloud service. A sample application is delivered, demonstrating this capability. Yet another option is a dedicated MorphStick device solely for the purpose of logging data from several sources.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

The PoE version allows to power the device with DC voltages up to 48V over the RJ-45 connector. The device can be powered either over USB or through PoE (or both), extending the flexibility of the application in which the MorphStick is used in. The PoE version fully supports IEEE 802.3af PoE specification, including PoE detection, classification and undervoltage lockout.

Internal memory and RTC

The Max version features high-capacity internal flash memory, and an RTC (Real Time Clock). The flash memory option adds 16GB internal memory for data logging purposes, while the RTC options adds time-stamps to the logged data. The set time and date is retained even when the device is powered off, thanks to an internal battery.
